Home/Why a battery

Why add a battery?

Back-up power for island outages, more use from your own solar, and control over when you draw from the grid.

Peace of mind

San Juan County relies on underwater transmission of electricity from the mainland, then overhead power lines to homes and businesses on the 20 islands with grid power. There have been planned and unplanned outages over the years.

Back-up power keeps the lights on, along with the fridge, the freezer and your other critical loads.

02

Get more from your solar

Solar power is only there while the sun is shining. A battery stores what your array makes so you can use it later, and once the battery is full, the extra can go back to the grid.

During an outage, your array can recharge the battery during the day, so you may only need to lean on the battery at night. With some planning, a solar and battery system can keep running through a long grid outage.

03

Control when you use the grid

Both FranklinWH and Fortress Power systems let you program when the battery powers your home and when the grid does. Unlike a diesel or propane generator, there’s no fuel to store and no engine to start.

Support a local business

We’re a FranklinWH Certified Installer and a locally owned small business based on Orcas Island. Our crew lives here too.
